Federated Search

One of the presentations at ILI 2004 was about Federated Search. I will write later about it. but does anybody know about it?

    I think this is much more a commercial name used by different information-providing companies. However, as far as I know, the idea is to use different academic databases in a uniformed search using a search application.

    fact1: this is not a common Search Engine to find everything everywhere, it is for academic purposes using certain resources.

    fact2: a searching member can search the federated (united)academic databases at the same time.

    fact3: the retrived results of a query are combined (and probably ranked) together.

    Please tell me if I am wrong.
